Hebrews 1:1–4 ‘But in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.’ (v2)

The Hebrew writer contrasts the Old Covenant and New: the one spoken to ancestors through prophets versus that spoken to us by God’s Son.

He will go on to amplify the wonderful elements of the New Covenant in the epistle, which is clearly written to people with a Jewish background tempted back into Judaism, in part because they would be less likely to be persecuted.

The writer adds two details: Jesus is appointed heir of all things and it is through Jesus that the universe is made.

These truths tie in with other parts of the Bible, and it seems clear that creation itself is a project by Father, Son and Holy Spirit, designed to be an overflow of the love and life of the Trinity who longed to have beings with whom that love would be shared.

John 1:1–3 tells us that Jesus (the Word) is there at the beginning, and as ‘the Son’ is involved in creating all things.

Here we learn that He is heir of all things: and Romans 8:17 tells us that we, as those adopted into God’s family as His children, will inherit all that Christ ‘inherits’, which includes freedom from sin and eternal life in His presence enjoying the new heavens and earth.

You may not be very rich in a bank balance or possessions sense, and maybe your investments have taken a hit recently, but your future is extremely bright.

You will want for nothing as God’s riches are lavished upon you. Today, remember how blessed you are to have been spoken to ‘by the Son’.
