Read Luke 1:46–56

‘And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me – holy is his name.”’ (vv46–49)

When the full realisation and enormity of the angel Gabriel’s announcement sank in for Mary, that she would give birth to the long-promised Saviour, her reaction was one of praise and rejoicing.

In what is titled ‘Mary’s song’ in Scripture, the lyrics give us a great model for our worship as we celebrate the birth of Christ today. Mary’s song glorified the Lord (v46) and acknowledged Him as Saviour (v47).

The wonder of God with us is also something to pass on to future generations (v48), pointing people to the great things God has done (v49).

Many people today lament the sense of what they see as a loss of the Christmas spirit – often commenting on how it ‘does not feel like Christmas’.

Yet, like Mary, as God’s people, we have something to sing about. Might it be as we celebrate Christmas this year, that we are able to point those around us to the Saviour, singing of His wonderful acts and glorifying Him.

I will sing the wondrous story
Of the Christ who died for me
How He left His home in glory
For the cross of Calvary.
