Jeremiah 1:4–19 ‘“Alas, Sovereign LORD,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.”’ (v6)

Jeremiah has been called – but he believes he’s not up to it! He thinks he’s too young to do what God is asking.

God replies that he shouldn’t say that; after all, the Lord Himself has called the young man, and so Jeremiah must obey, and not be afraid (v8)!

God is with him, and will look after him. In verse 9 we read that the Lord touches him, and puts His words into the mouth of the young prophet.

Obedience to God for Jeremiah will mean some considerable suffering; but he will fulfil his call, for he is God’s man for the job.

We might feel called to a position that we don’t feel ready for. Perhaps we are young in age, or young in the faith. Sometimes, we do need experience to take on certain roles in the Christian life.

For instance, 1 Timothy 3:6 stipulates that an ‘overseer’, or perhaps, senior leader, ‘must not be a recent convert’. Why?

Because of the possibility of pride. But of course, we may be mature in the faith at a very young age, if we have known the Lord for a long time!

The fact is, there is a place for humility when we come to positions of leadership; Jeremiah does not feel ready, but God knows him and has called him to a specific work (v5).

In our own lives, we need to know and recognise His call, be obedient, and be humble in it. Others may also see our giftings, and encourage us in them.

It can be a journey of understanding and revelation, but we can be sure that if God has called us, He will equip us.
