Read Romans 8:31–39

‘For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ (vv38–39)

For many people, Christmas can be a sad time as they remember loved ones who are no longer with them. Perhaps others are separated by geography, or perhaps through work – those in the armed forces, for example.

The constant images of family meals and celebrations can serve to amplify any feelings of loss or loneliness. Practically, it is good for God’s people to think about how we might reach out to someone feeling such loss at this time of year.

Yet, whatever loss or separation we may be feeling this Christmas, in the eighth chapter of Paul’s letter to the Romans, he speaks about something that we cannot be separated from – the love of God (v39).

Whatever our circumstances or situation – whether we are hospitalised, serving in the forces away from home, or grieving the loss of loved ones – God’s love reaches us.

And what is more, no powers or circumstances can separate us from this amazing love.

Christmas reminds us of this as it tells us how God’s love ‘came down’, dwelt amongst us (John 1:14).

Whatever way we celebrate Christmas, whether it is with our wider group of family or friends, or in the quietness of our own home – reach out to God, receive His inseparable love.
