purpose not plans

Proverbs 19:21–23 ‘Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.’ (v21)

I’m no planner. I’ve always lived in the immediate, finding difficulty in laying medium- to long-term plans. Whilst reducing my sources for anxiety, reality can surprise me with its intense demands. We are all created differently, so my approach is just one amongst many. However, one thing uniting us all is that God has a purpose for our lives, from prayer to the fundamental ‘why’ of our existence.

Just as there is no comprehensive approach to prayer, but unique paths crafted by God’s Spirit that lead us from contemplating the fullness of God to intercession for the pressing needs that weigh on our hearts, so no one purpose effectively describes our unique place in God’s mission. Seeking to live every day with Jesus is the universal of discipleship, but we each face different circumstances, are constantly shaped by different experiences, and have our own temperaments (affecting mood and behaviour) to manage.

We must take time to discern our core purpose, which in my experience changes over the years and needs reimagining on occasion. Knowing I am a contemplative and a friend has enabled me to order my life and time to serve God’s primary purpose. I know what to accept and what to decline amongst life’s many opportunities, giving greater confidence and excellent time management.

Scripture to consider: Exod. 9:13–21; Psa. 90; Isa. 55:8–13; 2 Tim. 1:6–14.

An action to take: Have you taken time with God to discern God’s purpose in your life?
A prayer to make: ‘Lord, help me to live according to Your purpose and serve You in all I think, say and do. Amen.’
