bread of life

‘Then Jesus declared, ”I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”’ (v35) John 6:32–40

Jesus’ eight ‘I am’ statements provide specific indicators of Jesus’ unique qualities. They reveal Jesus as God’s Son and not simply a good teacher.

Our mortal lives are fuelled by the food we eat. We know some foods are ‘healthy’ whilst others are regarded as ‘junk’. The difference? Healthy food offers ‘our bodies the nutrients they need to run efficiently and fight off sickness and disease’. Junk food, usually processed, threatens ‘empty calories—foods… full of fat and sugar’, lacking the many nutrients that help the body focus, exercise, or perform’.

The source of our God encounter is as important to spiritual health as the source of our food is to our body. We’re invited, by Jesus Himself, to draw our life from Him. How? Through Scripture, itself God’s Word. It transforms our understanding of God, ourselves, others, and the world in which we live.

God’s Word meets our inner hunger, not our natural appetite, which the people followed Jesus for after the feeding of the five thousand (John 6:26–27), rather than because of a deep yearning for inner peace and understanding. Once found, there’s nothing that can compare, and all other ambitions fade. Every appetite we have ever experienced can be satisfied from God’s larder this is the challenge that greets every Christian, one we pursue daily.

RELATED SCRIPTURE TO CONSIDER: 2 Sam. 22:31–37; Ezek. 37:3–14; John 1:1–18; 1 Thess. 2:13–16.

AN ACTION TO TAKE: If you are battling with something that robs you of God’s supply then it may help to speak with someone.

A PRAYER TO MAKE: ‘Lord, I approach You as the bread that satisfies my deepest hunger. Help me in my struggles so that I am wholly satisfied with the bread of life. Amen.’
