‘For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I am not guilty of turning from my God.’ (v21) Psalm 18:20–24

The great promise of Jesus is that the kingdom of God finds expression on earth. For heaven broke into this world in the person of Jesus. Now risen and ascended to pray beside His Father for the world He came to save, we are invited to walk in His footsteps, guided by the Holy Spirit.

Watching a toddler learning to walk is a joy. Their will outruns their ability, but not their belief.

They pull themselves up on anything available and launch into the unknown, staggering until gravity returns them to the floor. Seldom discouraged they repeat this exercise until they joyfully make their way into the celebratory arms of a beaming parent.

That’s how I see my Christian life. I know the kingdom way and make consistent attempts to pull myself up and stagger in Jesus’ footsteps. I tumble and fall frequently. Slowly I gain my walking skills and assume I’ve mastered walking, until I trip or fall.

Most recently I was walking whilst gazing intently at something and walked straight into a lamppost, to which I instinctively apologised. Now I was the street spectacle!

God’s ways invite us to develop a kingdom walk on earth. We may stumble and fall; we might injure ourselves or our pride. But we must always haul ourselves back up and keep going.

An Action to Take: Think about how steady you are on your feet. What are the trip hazards in your path as you walk the kingdom way?

A Prayer to Make: ‘Lord, search me and see if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me into the kingdom way. Amen.’ (See Psalm 139.)
