‘LORD, the God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven or on earth – you who keep your covenant of love with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way.’ (v14) 2 Chronicles 6:3–15

A covenant is a binding promise. Usually made between two parties, it places responsibilities on both parties. The covenant’s benefits are dependent upon both parties keeping their covenant throughout its term. The word simply means to come together, and that is the work of Jesus. He has come and restored the family relationship with our creator.

When my father worked in the city of London, he said much business was done over lunch. A simple handshake was as solid an agreement as a carefully researched legal contract.

A person’s word was their bond. How far we have moved as a society in sixty years! Yet, God takes us at our word. No contracts, instead a simple verbal promise. God makes His promise through His Word, Jesus.

This is then recorded and revealed through God’s living Word, Scripture. In every page, we find God’s wholehearted promise to humanity. We are invited to make our wholehearted response, committed beyond any doubt, to God. Here’s the challenge. God’s covenant promises His presence and provision for all society yet requires that we agree to keep its terms completely.

When we see God’s influence diminishing throughout society it’s not that God’s ‘batteries’ are failing. It’s a clear indication that we, God’s people, are defaulting on our covenant commitment. Let’s look this week at this covenant in detail.

Related Scripture to Consider: Deut. 29; Hos. 6:1–3; Matt. 26:26–29; Heb. 4:12–13.

An Action to Take: Think about how good you are at keeping your word. Read Scripture and take notes on the word God invites you to keep.

A Prayer to Make: ‘Lord, let Your word that You have promised come true. Amen.’
