Beginnings

‘In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.’ (vv1–2) Genesis 1:1–5

It’s reassuring to know that everything that exists was created by a supreme intelligence – God. In times of uncertainty, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, life can prove challenging.

Where can we find the level of security we crave? Well, it remains where it has always been, rooted in the truth of God’s Word

This same Jesus, who was present at the creation of our world, is a constant – the same yesterday, today and for ever (Heb. 13:8). Our confidence stems from the fact that God is both the first cause and final end.

Nothing lies outside of God. Our battle involves turning our knowledge of this immovable reality into a confidence that, despite the changing circumstances of life, our experience of the presence of God can remain the same.

The Word of God is consistent, and we read it daily to continually reinforce the foundations that underpin our lives. It’s what might be called regular maintenance to counter the ravages of time. Failure leads to expensive bills for radical restoration, once time has eaten away at what was once a solid home for the Holy Spirit.

All too quickly we can lose our spiritual condition and crumble into a formless and empty shell of who God created us to be. God’s Word is our confidence, ‘’For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ’ (2 Cor. 1:20a)

SCRIPTURE TO CONSIDER: Prov. 3:1–26; Psa. 139:1–18; Matt. 7:24–29; Rom. 8:31–39.

AN ACTION TO TAKE: God has the ability to create something out of nothing. Is your house in need of some holy renovation?

A PRAYER TO MAKE: ‘Lord, help me always to find confidence in the assurance of your Word. In the name of Jesus, Amen.’
